Nitrogen is frequently used to fill aircraft and race car tires, and is becoming a more popular option for personal vehicle tires.

The permeation rate of nitrogen through rubber is 40-60% of the oxygen transmission rate, making it possible to estimate the nitrogen transmission rate through OTR testing. With this in mind, a tire manufacturer submitted rubber samples to MOCON for analysis to determine the nitrogen transmission rate through rubber to ensure their tires would be able to maintain an acceptable tire pressure.
